John Tory recently announced that Toronto Public Library failed to stop online porn on computers accessed and funded by the public.
He stated that City of Toronto will look further into why Toronto library did not use Internet filters on computers available for use in Toronto library branches. The official response from Toronto Public Library is that “There is no perfect filter,”.
Toronto Public Library does have a policy that if someone in the library branches sees someone viewing something that is making them uncomfortable, they should talk to a staff member who are all trained in the library’s rules of conduct.
Some interesting numbers included that Toronto Public Library has over 6.5 million annual uses on 1,800 computers with Internet access.
What can your business learn from this experience?
If you have an internal IT department or trusted IT consultant, your business should be on a business class firewall already however you should ensure you address the points below to stop online porn.
- All businesses should run business class firewalls from repeatable manufacturers including Cisco, SonicWALL, Barracuda or even Juniper. There are many others but it is important that they are business class and not consumer grade gear.
- Ensure the firewall includes security services such as Content Filtering. Content filtering services include multiple rating categories such as “Violence, Hate & Racism ” and “Adult/Mature Content”.
- You can increase employee productivity or you can also control risks to the network in terms of bandwidth usage such as “Freeware/Software downloads” or “Multimedia”.
