SQL Server 2005 End of Support is Coming!

Microsoft has announced SQL Server 2005 end of support date of April 12, 2016 as it will be pushing client to migrate to a newer edition or to Azure.

This is no surprise or unexpected as SQL Server 2005 has been in the “extended support” phase since April 2011. End of support for SQL Server 2005 means no more security patches for the product unless you have a Microsoft Premier Support agreement.

For organizations planning to upgrade their on-premises SQL Server, Microsoft is offering the ability to upgrade to SQL Server 2014 as long as it is not a 32-bit edition.  Another option is to move to Microsoft Azure SQL Database v12. Microsoft is also offering an own open source tool to aid in SQL migration.

If your organization is running SQL Server 2008 or SQL Server 2008 R2, Microsoft will continue to provide technical support which also includes security updates during the duration of extended support until July 9, 2019.

For complete details on SQL Server 2005 End of Support, visit Microsoft website.

You are able to download a trial edition of SQL Server 2014 as well as how to plan your SQL upgrade with your IT department or an IT support of a partner.
