Petya Ransomware Spreading Like WannaCry Ransomware

There are worldwide ransomware reports of Petya ransomware spreading like WannaCry ransomware.  Is your data and business protected?

The reports have been coming from targets in Spain, France, Ukraine, Russia, and other countries as a wide range of private businesses have suffered from Petya ransomware attacks.

According to an IT security researcher at Kaspersky Labs, they have seen several thousand infection attempts at the moment which is comparable to WannaCry ransomware.

According to many reports and photos, the Petya ransomware involves a piece of ransomware that displays red text on a black background and demands $300 in Bitcoin.

The red text for Petya ransomware reads “If you see this text, then your files are no longer accessible because they are encrypted. Perhaps you are busy looking for a way to recover your files, but don’t waste your time. Nobody can recover your files without our decryption service.”

Petya ransomware is a well-known highly advanced ransomware strain that also encrypts the Master File Table.  It is taking advantage of an exploit called “EternalBlue”. It is the same exploit used in the WannaCry ransomware attacks as it takes advantage of a vulnerability in the SMB data-transfer protocol.  Microsoft has patched this known issue however many have not applied the Microsoft patch.

How do you protect yourself from Petya Ransomware?

You must apply the Microsoft patch immediately as Petya Ransomware spreads to machines behind firewalls. It will only take one machine behind the firewall to become infected too then put all other workstations and servers at risk.

If you have an IT team or managed IT services provider who is discipline and using a proactive Windows updates schedule, you should be protected.  If not, it is extremely important to take action to protect your data.

Petya ransomware is nasty and works very differently from any other ransomware malware.

Protect your business from Petya ransomware as well as other malware.
