Good news for cloud services as Microsoft launches two Canadian data centres giving Canadians the option for “Canada Data Residency” only.
Microsoft has launched two new Canadian data centres for Azure and Office 365 and very soon, Dynamics CRM Online is scheduled to join them by September with the “Canada Data Residency” option. The Microsoft Data Centres will operate Azure is now generally available from local data centre regions located in Toronto and Quebec City, and Office 365 is now offering data residency for Canadian business customers. In addition, Dynamics CRM Online is scheduled to go live by September 2016.
Azure has been available in Canada for some time now but there was never an option for Canadian data residency or Canadian data centres which caused data sovereignty issues for many. Microsoft has argued that information has been safe and secure even from governments however due to regulatory restrictions and constant battles to win clients over, Microsoft chose to respond to client response and invest in Azure and Office 365 with Canadians in mind.
Privacy laws in Canada have few restrictions on storing data outside Canadian but there were two wild cards including Nova Scotia and B.C. privacy act that restricts certain types of personally identifiable information from leaving the country.
With the Canadian datacentres in place and the option to select “Canada Data Residency” only, Azure and Office 365 will see a big jump in Canada as more healthcare, insurance and financial providers jump onboard.
