As ransomware becomes a top threat, law enforcement and IT are tackling ransomware and other cyber threats however you can protect your business.
Recently, the Dutch National Police, Europol, Intel Security and Kaspersky Lab launched a new initiative to fight ransomware and cyber criminals. This is an excellent cooperation of law enforcement and the private sector working together to protect data from cyber criminals.
During a recent study from Kaspersky Labs, the number of ransomware victims is growing at an alarming rate. The number of users attacked by crypto-ransomware rose by 550% in 2016 to 718,000 compared to 131 000 in 2015. Cybercrime is growing at an incredible rate and this impacting the economy.
The biggest problem with ransomware is it locks data locked down and you have to pay cyber criminals to get it back. Pretty simple process.
Here in Canada, the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) encourages victims to contact Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre when hit by a cyber crime. Recently, they posted the following threat to alert Canadians.

If you receive a phone call or an on-line pop-up message claiming to be from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Canadian Security Intelligence Service or Canadian Cyber Incident Response Centre asking to either give access to your computer, or pay a certain amount of money to unlock your computer or your phone, please be aware that it is a scam. These messages or calls are not from the RCMP, CSIS or other government of Canada representatives.
Do not give remote access to your computer in response to an unsolicited call or message.
We strongly encourage Canadians to report such instances of fraud to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre by phone 1-888-495-8501 or via their website at http://www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca/
